I'm a full-time freelance writer who has published seven nonfiction books, two novels, and hundreds of articles on a wide range of topics.
My nonfiction books include Your Perfect Job: A guide to discovering your gifts, following your passions, and loving your work for the rest of your life (Shaw Books/Random House) and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Faith (Alpha Books/Penguin). My latest nonfiction book is a concise, digital-only labor of love, Freelance Writing with the iPad, readable exclusively on Macs and iOS devices, available from Apple's iBooks Store.
Since 1985, my work has appeared in a variety of publications, including:Super Lawyers, The Chicago Tribune Magazine, BoxScore, USAirways' Attaché, The Federal Credit Union, Preservation, Family Circle, PAGES, American Profile, The Writer, and Writer's Digest. I've contributed chapters to The Complete Campus Companion (IVP) and The ASJA Guide to Freelance Writing (St. Martin's Griffin), where I wrote about making the transition from part-time to full-time freelancing.
Most recently, my focus has been on trade-magazine writing. I'm a frequent contributor to print magazines for a wide range of industries and interests, including NAFCU Journal (National Association of Federally Insured Credit Unions), BoxScore (Independent Packaging Association), American Gas (American Gas Association), Compoundings (Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association), and Destinations (American Bus Association).
When I'm not writing for publication, I'm also a songwriter/musician who writes and records in my home studio. To date, I've released four full-length albums and one EP. All but one are available through a variety of online retailers, including iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby, as well as all of the streaming services (Apple Music, Spotify, etc.).
- The Honest Truth (2004; not available)
- This Hummingbird (2006)
- Doubt & Devotion (2011)
- Glass Half Full (EP) (2015)
- Glass Half Gone (2015)
I'm currently nearing the end of recording my next album-length release, Line in the Sand, which I'm hoping will come out in November. (You can hear an earlier mix of one of the songs, "Tears to Cry," here. It's also available on Spotify and all the other major platforms.)
I am a member of Biographers International and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and am a former board member and president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA).
